How this ranking is built
- Source: NYC Department of Buildings DOB NOW permit issuances (NYC Open Data). Every permit traces back to its original public filing.
- Window: the permits our engine has tracked in New York City, June 25, 2026 – August 21, 2026. It counts only that window, so it isn't a calendar-year or lifetime total.
- Scope: commercial permits our engine flags as HVAC-relevant (mechanical scope in play). That's a filtered slice of the county's building permits.
- Who counts: the licensed contractor who pulled the permit (the DOB permittee). Owner-filed permits and design professionals are not ranked.
- Names: filing variants are normalized (punctuation, LLC/Inc suffixes) and merged. Permit records are messy, so a firm filing under different names can still appear more than once. We correct verified errors on request.
- Ranked by permit count; ties broken by total reported value. Filing volume measures activity in the public record. It says nothing about revenue, quality, or workmanship.
